HandBrakeWe bought a JVC Everio Camera earlier this summer and we’ve been filling it up with video since then. Now I’ve got the need to convert that video and realized that the format is actually called .mod which most video editing programs on Windows and Linux don’t understand. JVS shipped some software that can convert it but I am a Linux guy and wanted it to work on my Ubuntu notebook and wanted it easy for my wife to do on Windows 7.

So after a lot of Googling I came to the conclusion that there was no good way to do it without purchasing some annoying 3rd party video tools. Sitting in my chair feeling a bit defeated it finally came to me. Handbrake!

Handbrake is by far the single greatest tool (read powerful and free) for converting videos from one format to another. I’ve been using it to convert video on Ubuntu for a long time for PSP and DS. Maybe it would do .mod files too! I fired it up and sure enough it did it without fail!

So if you’re stumped by this .mod format – try out Handbrake. You can use it on Windows and Linux.

Happy video editing!
