Spark Internet Marketing has launched a new campaign aimed at getting the public out to the poles on October 14th. The campaign is comprised of Digital Lawn Signs which can be used to place on your Facebook, Twitter, Blog, Personal Web Page, or website. Signs are available for all parties, including one just to promote the vote!
To get your sign go to “Spark! The Vote” and take the short 5 question Poll. You’ll then be able to download your Digital Lawn Sign!
While in University I spent alot of time touring the Maritimes and wound up seeing more of those provinces than Ontario despite having grown up here. As a kid we did a lot of camping are some of my fondest memories. This provinces beauty never ceases to amaze me. The trouble is many people who live here don’t think about it that way because we’re all too busy working – and we get our vacation ideas from the T.V. As a result I’ve made a resolution to tour more of Ontario and see what beauty she has to offer!
Now that my son is of an age where he can enjoy camping we’ve begun our summer camping trips. Last year we tried out Sandbanks Provincial Park, and this year we tried out Presqu’ile which was even better. Both parks are on Lake Ontario just east of Coburg so it’s at most a 1 hour drive from Oshawa.
Presqu’ile is a beautiful park with huge sandy beaches with lots of shallow warm water. Great for kids who can run and play in the water with adult supervision – but you don’t have to worry about them getting clobbered by a huge wave (unless it’s really stormy). Since it’s a spit of land – there is a very large marshland and boardwalks on the opposite side of the beaches, and of course many scenic trails and a beautiful rocky beach near the campgrounds. In fact we had quite a few good swims there. The shore is rocky made of perfect skipping stones and instead of sand, there is flat bedrock that extends out into the water in wonderful steps which you can sit on in the water. On our last day we took a drive all the way out to the end of campground where the historic lighthouse is and the natural center all of which are open for tours. Our son got to pet a local snake, and feed worms to frogs. Apparently that was the best part of the trip.
We spent two nights in total and had an amazing time. In fact, since the park is so close we’ve even begun day trips just spend time on the beach.
Here are a couple of pictures and if you want to see my first attempt at a photosynth click here.
Well it looks like we’re finally in for some good weather for this weekend. I’m sure we’re all looking forward to it! I for one am. We’re celebrating our 7th wedding anniversary this weekend and we’ve got a great trip planned to Port Hope! The warm sunny weather this weekend will make the trip so much more enjoyable.
We’re staying at Penstowe – an absolutely fantastic bed and breakfast with tremendous services, hospitality, food and accomodations. All for less than a regular hotel! This will be our third time staying there and it seems to get better each time.

The only difference this time is that we’re bringing our five year old son – which apparently is not a problem for the bed and breakfast. They just gave us the bigger room.
So keep your fingers crossed for great weather and make the most of it while it lasts this weekend!
The Oshawa Ethanol Plant
Jul 25
Oshawa it would appear is poised to have an Ethanol Plant put down on the waterfront. For some it may be a good idea. With the looming layoffs and downsizing at GM a new Ethanol Plant would help to employee some of these hard workers. Same with another Nuclear Power Plant – that’s going to generate quite a few skilled contracting jobs for a long time during construction and afterwards for maintenance.
But – is the Ethanol Plant a good thing in general? Is it good for the waterfront and is it ultimately good for world economy. There are several arguments on both sides of this story.
On the one hand Ethanol manufacturing is driving up the cost of food prices around the world and removing corn from the table and placing it into our cars. On the other hand it does reduce emmissions and employs hundreds if not thousands of people.
I’m not sure where I sit on this debate. I like the idea of generating jobs for Oshawa. But I’d like to make sure that the Ethanol Plant proponents were also responsible for cleaning up a significant part of the waterfront if that’s the site they are going to build on. I guess I’ll have to do some more reading about it and see what else is being said.
If you’re interested in following this debate I suggest you visit the “Take Back Oshawa’s Waterfront” group on Facebook. Brian Nicholson and Mayor John Gray are members of this group! The group is running its own poll which you can vote on here. You can also vote for your opinion on the DurhamRegion News site.
I encourage you to leave your comments here and share your thoughts with our readers!
Layout Update
Jul 19
It’s day two and the new site layout is coming along nicely. I’m trying to decide which categories of information to feature on the home page. I suppose I’ll figure all of that out over time. Please feel free to leave me a comment – there all followed and I like the advice and information.
Cheers,
Chris
